Former Chiefs star reveals consequences he faced for reporting 10LBS overweight to training camp

Pro Hall of Fame coach and Vermeil Wines’ Dick Vermeil, left, speaks at Hotel Hartness White Oak Ballroom in Greenville, S.C. Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

Jason Dunn has retired after spending 11 seasons in the NFL. The former tight end spent his career with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Dunn was recently a guest on the Chiefs Concerns podcast.

Dunn touched upon a lot of topics on the podcast. From Chiefs vs. Ravens memories to Monday Night Football in Arrowhead. However, there was one particular training moment that Dunn shared that became the highlight of the show.

"And I was over. I forgot what I was over. I've only been like 10 pounds over where my weight was supposed to be," said Dunn on the podcast. "You know what I mean? ...they thought it needed extra work. We would call like an extra camp. We would call it a conditioning camp, and all those guys had to stay after each had to do practice, do extra conditioning, and all of those different things."

Naturally, Dunn had to face the coach's rebuttal as a result, as he revealed in the Chiefs Concerns podcast.

Dick Vermeil, the Chiefs coach at that time, was livid. He would then go on to criticize Dunn for "lying to his face," creating a moment Dunn now laughed thinking about.

Dunn ended his career with 81 receptions and 910 yards. Not just from his playing days, Dunn also shared some issues with Kansas' current situation.

Jason Dunn feels Chiefs coaches might fire Andy Reid’s staff

During the Chiefs Concern podcast, the current coaching situation was also part of the discussion. According to Dunn, position groups didn't naturally perform well.

Podcast host Marcus Dash also seconded the statement.

"Yeah, I'm more with you. I don't think there'd be some major change," said Dash," I don't think Andy would be fired... maybe (Dave) Toub's gone if (Harrison) Butker keeps missing kicks, Andy's not going to get fired for that but Butker probably is gone after that."

Toub has been part of Kansas since 2013. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2018. He already has quite a few Super Bowl-winning campaigns for Kansas.

However, the story is a little different for Kansas Harrison Butker. According to KansasCityHuddle, his field goal percentage has dropped from 86.8% in 2025 from 94.3% back in 2023. That would inadvertently build pressure on Toub.

"I do believe that he's given a full amount of grace for maybe some bad coaching," concluded Dunn," And that's for real... took to five Super Bowls and won three."

So a big switch-up might happen in the coaching roster soon. Though Reid's position under the current circumstances is safe.
