Former NFL veteran Aldon Smith has passed away at the age of 36, his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, confirmed. NFL insider Ian Rapoport also shared the update, calling it “horribly sad,” as tributes started coming from across the football community.

The 49ers shared an official statement on Saturday, June 13, 2026, about Smith’s passing. The team also remembered his talent and the mark he made. Smith broke an NFL sack record when he became the fastest player in league history to reach 30 career sacks, accomplishing the feat in just 27 games.

"We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," the 49ers said in a statement. "Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display…deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon."

However, no official details have been released on the manner or the cause of Smith's passing yet.

LB Aldon Smith was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 out of Missouri as a linebacker. He made an immediate impact in the NFL, recording 14 sacks in his rookie season.

In 2012, Smith had a big season with 19.5 sacks, earning First-Team All-Pro honors and helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl XLVII.

Despite this early success, his career later had off-field issues, from 2013 to 2015, including violations of personal conduct policies. After that, he joined the Oakland Raiders but was given a one-year suspension.

This eventually became an indefinite NFL ban that lasted four seasons, due to similar reasons as earlier off-field issues.

The announcement brought several reactions from fans, who looked back at Smith’s journey.
