QB Who Claimed To Be Better Than Patrick Mahomes Issues Clarification On The Statement

Last week, flag football player Darrell Doucette III captained Team USA to win the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, but his win brought back past claims about Mahomes, which he's now gone on to clarify.

Doucette has come forth and clarified his past statement on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes by talking about how the NFL and Flag Football have their differences.

“I made some remarks that was totally misconstrued and misunderstood,” he said, according to The Athletic's Tim Graham and Vic Tafur.

Doucette has been a flag football player since childhood, and his point was solely in reference to the Summer Olympics in a couple of years.

“All I was speaking of was about giving my brothers a fair chance to make (the Summer Olympics in) 2028," Doucette further said. "We came out this weekend...to say, ‘Let's show these guys that we are talented, that we are flag football and not to be overlooked by anyone in the world.’”

In 2024, Doucette caught a lot of heat from football fans for stating, “I’m better than Patrick Mahomes.”

The comment drew criticism and even a reaction from Mahomes, who posted a GIF of a confused-looking 50 Cent.

“I'm not saying I'm a better player overall, but until he steps on a 5v5 flag field, I'm going to feel that way until it's proven otherwise!” he told TMZ in 2024. “I'm a competitor and need to be proven wrong.”

His victory with Team USA in the tournament served as his response.

Doucette and Co. Had an Absolute Field Day With the NFL Players

In the Los Angeles showdown against the Founders FFC, boasting Joe Burrow and co-captained by legendary former quarterback Tom Brady, Doucette clinched victory with a huge margin. His team set a 3-0 record and won with a combined score of 106-44. And took home the MVP honors.

Team USA won in the BMO Stadium, which is hosting the flag football game in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. And Doucette is one of the few people who can pride themselves on defeating Brady and even trying to get under his skin a bit.

On the Rich Eisen Show, he revealed that the seven-time Super Bowl was competitive as ever and did not like the trash talk.

“I had a little banter back and forth with Tom just to ruffle a little feathers,” Doucette said. “It was all fun and games… but he showed his competitive spirit out there. Yeah, he didn’t like it.”

Doucette’s earlier remarks pave the way for some questions: What would the game have looked like if he played against Mahomes? And would Mahomes have accepted the challenge?
