Patrick Mahomes weighs in on potential Messi-Ronaldo face-off in Kansas City

A possible Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo clash in Kansas City is now being discussed, and Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has reacted to the idea.
Speaking about Arrowhead Stadium's role in the FIFA Club World Cup, Mahomes said Argentina and Portugal could meet there if both nations top their respective groups.
"Yeah, if Argentina and Portugal both get the top seed, they'll be playing in one of the qualifying rounds at Arrowhead Stadium," Mahomes said. "That'd be a good one to see those greats play, kind of towards the end of their careers."

According to Matthew Bedard of Flaunt Magazine, the interview took place inside Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, where Mahomes spoke about the FIFA Club World Cup setup.
This isn’t the first time Mahomes has shown interest in football. His wife, Brittany, has been more vocal about soccer, and over time, the Mahomes family has started following the sport closely.
When asked about his plans for the World Cup and his relationship with the sport, Mahomes opened up about his journey with soccer.
"Yeah, I mean, obviously I watched the World Cup growing up," said Mahomes. "I didn’t play soccer but my wife played professional soccer, and so I have kind of [fallen] in love with the game over these last five to 10 years watching her play in college and professionally, and now owning the Kansas City Current with her and Sporting KC."
Mahomes also revealed that he has tickets to games at Arrowhead Stadium and plans to be there in person, cheering on his favorite teams.
Mahomes' excitement over the possibility of seeing Lionel Messi and Ronaldo at Arrowhead isn't new. He has previously shown his admiration for the Argentine star during international competition.
Mahomes reacts on X after Messi’s hat-trick at Arrowhead
Mahomes attended the World Cup match at Arrowhead Stadium, where Argentina faced Algeria, and later shared his reaction by posting three goat emojis on X (@PatrickMahomes), reflecting on the 'G.O.A.T.' status of Messi.
Messi scored three goals in the match (hat-trick) and helped Argentina secure a win. With this, he also reached 16 World Cup goals in total, equaling Miroslav Klose’s record for most goals in World Cup history.
With goals against Austria and Jordan, Messi pushed the record even further, now standing alone as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 19 goals.
Messi’s hat-trick made the night historic, while Mahomes’ simple reaction showed respect from one top athlete to another.
While a Messi-Ronaldo clash at Arrowhead will depend on how the tournament unfolds, Mahomes has already made it clear that he'd welcome the opportunity to watch two of soccer's greatest players share the same stage in Kansas City.
