The three-time Super Bowl Champion, Patrick Mahomes, has made quite an impression on the former head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
During an appearance on Colin Cowherd's podcast 'The Herd' on 30 April, Mike Gundy claimed Mahomes as the 'best college quarterback' he had ever seen.
“He’s the best college quarterback that I’ve ever seen. And I told him after his junior year, we beat them I think by one point. … I went out on the field and told him, ‘Patrick, there’s no reason you should come back and play college football next year,” Gundy said.
During the 2014 season, Mahomes achieved All-Big 12 Honourable Mention and Freshman Offensive Player of the Year with the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
” You need to go out [for the draft].’ And he laughed, but I was being serious because he was the best college quarterback that I’ve ever seen. He made play after play after play after play. And he did it in very high-scoring games," Gundy added.
As a freshman, Mahomes passed for 1,547 yards and 16 touchdowns. By the time his junior season ended, he had recorded 5,052 passing yards and 53 total touchdowns.
During his tenure with the Red Raiders, Mahomes led the nation in total offense and set an FBS record with 819 offensive yards against the Oklahoma Sooners in 2016. Across three seasons, he completed 857 of 1349 passes, with a 63.9% completion rate.
After his decorated collegiate career, the Chiefs are now taking a careful approach, as Patrick Mahomes moves into Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
Mahomes Joins OTAs Before Training Camp
Patrick Mahomes is recovering from an ACL and LCL tear he sustained last December and is focusing on regaining his strength by rehabbing his injuries.
With the team moving toward OTAs, the Chiefs are carefully deliberating how and when to bring him back into full team activities.
These offseason practice sessions will be a fresh start for Mahomes, as OTAs typically focus on bare minimum contract while tackling the QB. It will also help him familiarize himself with the plays and drills.
During the press conference after the Chiefs' rookie minicamp, head coach Andy Reid discusses Mahomes' recovery before the season.
"He is in a good position to be able to do some things," Reid explained, reminding reporters that the current practice phase prohibits contact due to his injury.
The coach confirmed that his quarterback is already practising on his own behind the scenes. According to GM Brett Veach, he is working from 7 AM to 4 PM.
According to a report from AOL, Mahomes could lose his eligibility for the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Using the PUP designation keeps him off the active 90-man roster until he is fully cleared and gives the front office flexibility during training camp.
