Patrick Mahomes' contract has become part of the discussion after NFL Players Association Executive Director JC Tretter spoke about the gap between the league's highest earners and other players.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Tretter discussed Mahomes' $504.75 million deal through 2033, which averages $64 million per year beginning in 2027, the highest annual value in NFL history.
“What the league is phenomenal at is raising revenue and driving revenue growth,” Tretter said on Sunday. “And that’s the value of being in a revenue-sharing agreement with them… You know, the stock kept going up, a lot of that money is driven to the stars. It’s been great for them. You see the record-setting deals.”

Minimum-salary players saw gains under the 2020 collective bargaining agreement, and star players continue to sign record contracts. With Mahomes' contract as a precedent now, Tretter is pushing for more support for players in the middle of NFL rosters.
“That should continue. I’m not advocating for impacting them," Tretter continued in the Si.com report.“But it’s also looking at how do we drive increases and improvements to everybody else down the roster, too… I think there’s a lot of questions about a shrinking middle class and that there are haves and have-nots.”
Mahomes' contract, according to the Executive Director, became proof of the gap between the league's biggest stars and many other players, and he wants to understand how those differences could shape future NFLPA priorities.
Beyond his contract, Mahomes is at the center of Kansas City's plans as he recovers from injury.
Positive Mahomes Update Strengthens Chiefs' Hopes for Week 1
The Chiefs are preparing for training camp and monitoring Mahomes' recovery from the injury that ended his 2025 season after 14 games.
“Coming off a torn ACL and LCL and a December surgery, Mahomes was already working in install periods, individuals, and seven-on-sevens through OTAs,” Albert Breer wrote in his Si.com report on June 2. “He’s trending toward being fully cleared relatively soon, but I’d expect Kansas City to be judicious with him early in camp—because when you tell him to go, he’ll go.”
Mahomes' participation during offseason activities has given the Chiefs positive signs ahead of training camp. He is likely to manage workload carefully during the early stages of camp.
The team wants to make sure its quarterback continues to progress without unnecessary issues.
The Chiefs' star is entering his 10th NFL season and has recorded over 35,000 yards and three Super Bowl titles in his name. How do you think the quarterback will make his impact in September? Let us know!
