Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared a story about his journey back to the football field. The hardest part of his recovery was not the physical pain or missing the sport. Instead, a personal struggle tested his mental toughness the most.

The Kansas City Chiefs held their training camp media session on July 24, 2026. During the press conference, Mahomes spoke to reporters after receiving full medical clearance.

Mahomes noted, “You know, honestly, the toughest part was at the beginning was like not being able to get up and like chase my kids around like that. I know that sounds crazy, but being a dad and being active, I always want to be around my kids and playing and stuff like that. And so, I think that was tough."

The official Kansas City Chiefs YouTube channel (KCC) uploaded the entire press conference session. Mahomes' main challenge was not being able to play with his children, a core part of his identity as an active father.

Once he could play with his kids again, it gave him the motivation to keep improving. He mentioned wanting to be out there for his son Bronze’s T-ball games and his daughter Sterling’s soccer matches.

These family moments helped him mentally push through the long rehab process. He also felt confident about his return because of his mindset and the supportive people around him.

Mahomes also shared how the rest of his recovery is going right now. He feels stronger than ever from his time in the weight room. Now, his main focus is rebuilding his quarterback movement, pocket mobility, and quick reactions.

He plans to return to full capability, though he acknowledged recovery is ongoing. His immediate goal is to prove to his coaches and doctors that he can be the same quarterback, or maybe even better.

Mahomes is cleared for training camp and will wear a brace just for comfort. He is eager for what he called the toughest training camp of his career.

How the Chiefs' 2025 struggles make Patrick Mahomes' return crucial

Head coach Andy Reid provided a positive update. "Pat’s doing great with his injury,” Reid said. “Right now, he’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods that we have in this camp. And then we’ll just take it day by day and see how he does."

According to a Kansas City report, this statement confirmed his medical clearance for all training camp activities. The coaching staff, trainers, and doctors will continue monitoring him daily.

Several other NFL players helped him in his recovery journey. He spoke with Tom Brady, Tyrann Mathieu, and Zach Ertz about their own experiences. They shared valuable advice about recovering from similar ACL injuries.

The Chiefs need their leader back after a difficult 2025 season. The team finished with a disappointing 6-11 record. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Being ready for Week 1 against the Denver Broncos remains the team's primary goal. The final decision on his playing status will depend on the doctors and coaches. However, Mahomes intends to prepare as if he will play in that opening game.

Will he be ready to lead the Chiefs in Week 1?
