Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have spent years building one of the NFL's most successful partnerships. According to Mahomes, their relationship began with a night out that nearly got the young quarterback in trouble.

Speaking on the New Heights podcast, Mahomes recalled the early moment that made him realize he and Kelce had formed a connection. It came during the days when NFL teams still played a fourth preseason game, and players had some unexpected time off.

"The first time I thought me and Travis were gonna be connected was, you remember when we had the fourth preseason game," Mahomes said. "You used to have a little off time. I set eight alarms on my phone, and I go out with the rookies. I get out there, and I see old Travis Kelce."

Speaking on the New Heights podcast via YouTube on August 5, 2023, Mahomes recalled that while Kelce wanted to keep the fun going, he headed home and set several alarms so he could get some sleep.

Mahomes overslept after forgetting to charge his phone, then rushed to the Kansas City Chiefs' facility. When he arrived, team officials surprised him by asking whether he had been with Kelce.

That early connection eventually carried onto the field. Mahomes and Kelce have combined for 897 completions, 10,623 yards and 77 touchdowns, including the postseason.

Their playoff numbers have been particularly strong, with 149 completions, 1,740 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those figures are NFL records for a quarterback-target combination.

Their bond off the field has become a major part of Kansas City's culture, too. Mahomes and Kelce also teamed up at the steakhouse 1587 Prime, named after their jersey numbers.

The relationship that began with a missed alarm has lasted much longer than either player likely expected.

That partnership will again be part of Kansas City's offense in 2026.

According to a report by Nate Taylor of ESPN, the Chiefs are looking to rebound after going 6-11 and missing the playoffs in 2025. Mahomes' season also ended early because of ACL and LCL injuries.

Kansas City has spent the offseason adjusting its offense, including changes to its running game and play-action approach. The arrival of Kenneth Walker III gives the Chiefs another versatile option around Mahomes.

Travis Kelce addressed Mahomes' preparation ahead of the new season and praised the quarterback's work with Kansas City's receivers.

“Pat has done an unbelievable job of not only getting himself ready, but working with these receivers and making sure that everybody’s living up to that standard of how we’re going to play this year,” Kelce said.

Mahomes operated from shotgun on 80.6 percent of Kansas City's non-kneel-down snaps last season, the third-highest rate in the NFL.

He has also worked on selling play fakes more effectively by keeping the ball visible longer near the running back.

The work is aimed at making Kansas City's play-action game less predictable. The Chiefs open the 2026 season against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
