Kylian Mbappé delivered another unforgettable performance on Tuesday, July 1, netting twice in France's 3-0 Round of 32 victory over Sweden. The display quickly drew a reaction from Patrick Mahomes.
"@KMbappe is so cold,” Mahomes dropped a three-word praise on his X handle after Mbappe’s first goal.
With the game stuck at 0-0, France was looking at a deadlock until Mbappé shattered the stalemate in the 45th minute.
The French star created just enough separation with his dazzling footwork before unleashing a right-footed strike from a difficult angle, sending the ball soaring into the top corner beyond Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.
That first goal was just the start of Mbappé's actual masterclass. He added a second in the 74th minute as ‘Les Bleus’ sealed a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden to book a place in the Round of 16.
"I'm very aware of who I am, how I play, what I shall do, but it's not just about me," Mbappé said through a translator per ESPN. "The entire team is aware of what should be done. It is a new competition that has started today. We did play well, but we were timid. We could have done better at the beginning."
After yet another dazzling performance, Mbappé raised his tournament tally to six goals, and now his World Cup total is 18 goals, leaving him just behind Lionel Messi, who has 19 goals.
His performance against Sweden caught the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback's attention, who has been following the 2026 FIFA World Cup very closely.
After Lionel Messi netted his first World Cup hat trick against Algeria, the Chiefs superstar was among the millions left in awe of the Argentine's brilliant display.
Soon after the game ended, the two-time NFL MVP posted three goat emojis on X.
Meanwhile, an England striker shared his thoughts on Mahomes after meeting the NFL star.
Patrick Mahomes left a lasting impression on Ollie Watkins
While Ollie Watkins wasn't fully aware of Patrick Mahomes' superstar status in the U.S., the Aston Villa striker was still impressed by how down-to-earth the Chiefs quarterback was.
“I met Patrick Mahomes yesterday, a cool guy,” Watkins said via BBC 5 Live Sports. "At the golf course yesterday, Patrick Mahomes was doing a photo shoot, and he said he wanted to meet us. I was playing with [James Trafford], and we went and spoke to him for a good 10 minutes.”
As he recovers from ACL and LCL injuries this offseason, the quarterback has been following the World Cup closely. He has long been an avid fan of the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT).
Mahomes recently attended the Netherlands-Tunisia match during the group stage.
He is having the time of his life interacting with the soccer greats, but will he be able to heal up before Week 1? Share your thoughts.
