The Kansas City Chiefs are going to open their season against the Broncos on September 14th, but they have to be cautious with their quarterback's recovery and a possible Week 1 return. At least, that is what one NFL insider has said on one of the NFL's most famous podcasts.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Adam Schefter talked about Patrick Mahomes' recovery from the injury he endured last December, and the Chiefs star's appearance in the upcoming season.

“Is he gonna be 80%, 90%, 100%? Like that’s hard to imagine that he could just step in there right away after such a significant knee injury and pick up right where he left off and be as great as he’s always been,” Schefter questions Mahomes' return ability.

After five months of recovery, Mahomes has been approaching his rehab process well, spending about 7 hours in the workout and ‘being ahead of schedule’.

“I just think there’s gonna be a little bit of an adjustment to what he’s come back from, which is significant,” Schefter added.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs' star appearance at the golf tournament charity event by 15 and Mahomies in Las Vegas last week has raised hopes in the Chiefs for his recovery.

The video of him went viral, where he was wearing a compression sleeve on his knee while taking full golf swings, indicating the regaining of mobility and strength in his knee.

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel pointed to the footage as a positive sign, noting that being able to rotate the knee during a full swing at this stage of rehab indicates encouraging progress.

With uncertainty around QB’s recovery, Andy Reid has given a fresh update on Mahomes' fitness.

Patrick Mahomes’ return for the NFL season is still uncertain as questions continue around his knee recovery.

As per Talksport, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been monitoring Mahomes. The star quarterback is working through rehab and has been seen slowly increasing his activity, but the team is still not fully confirming his readiness for Week 1.

A former NFL physician, David J. Chao, spoke about the difficulty of Mahomes’ injury and why full recovery may take longer than expected. He gave a clear warning while explaining the medical side of the injury and its impact on mobility.

“No one is doubting him. But the fact is, when you tear the LCL and ACL, have the LCL repaired and the ACL reconstructed, this is a much higher bar than a simple ACL reconstruction," Chao said. "Can he play from the pocket? Sure. But it might be 2027 before Patrick Mahomes is fully mobile like he was before.”

The Chiefs now continue to balance optimism from Mahomes’ progress, keeping medical experts' cautions in mind as the new season approaches. They also know that they have a real option at QB2 with Justin Fields' recent signing.
