Travis Kelce's long-term NFL future has become a talking point after CBS analyst Nate Burleson suggested the Chiefs star could walk away from football following his marriage to Taylor Swift.
Speaking with Baker Machado at Front Office Sports HQ, Burleson argued that money is no longer a reason for Kelce to keep playing, saying the Chiefs tight end is financially secure enough to retire whenever he chooses.
“What I do know is whoever is going after Travis, they’re going to have to back that Brinks truck up,” Burleson said. “Because one, he’s made a ton of money in the league. His lady [Taylor Swift] got paper. So, he’s not gonna show up for cheap change.”

“And I just don’t know if CBS got the budget, but I’d gladly take a pay cut,” Burleson added humorously (YouTube @Front Office Sports). “My agent didn’t hear that by the way.”
Burleson made it clear he believes Kelce is in a position where continuing his NFL career is no longer driven by financial reasons, making retirement a legitimate possibility.
Kelce married Taylor Swift on July 3 in a high-profile ceremony that drew attention across the NFL and entertainment world.
Burleson also pointed to Kelce's broadcasting potential as another reason he believes the Chiefs star would have little trouble stepping away from football whenever he decides to retire.
“Listen, if Jason Kelce, who was the guy that reluctantly went into TV, you know, Trav is the guy that they’re gonna put on camera and he’s gonna do amazing,” Burleson continued. “He’s articulate…he’s a master of being in front of a microphone, given his podcast and the success.”
Burleson has added to the discussion around what comes next for Kelce beyond football. However, the Chiefs star remains focused on his playing career as he prepares for his 14th NFL season in Kansas City.
While questions about his future continue, Mahomes shared his thoughts on Kelce's lasting value to the Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes reveals what makes Travis Kelce special for the Chiefs
Speaking with Caroline Fenton of Yahoo Sports (YouTube @YahooSports) on July 15, Patrick Mahomes explained why Travis Kelce continues to be one of the Chiefs' most important players. The quarterback praised the veteran tight end's physical ability and leadership ahead of the new season.
“He has the physical gifts to go out there with that size, with that speed,” Mahomes said. “Elusiveness and catch the football.”
Mahomes not only pointed to Kelce's physical abilities but also highlighted the qualities that make him a trusted leader inside the Chiefs' locker room.
“But I think what makes him who he is,” Mahomes added. “The leader and the person that he is, like the teammates around him, want him to succeed because he’s going to give everything he has for the guys around him.”
While retirement speculation continues off the field, Mahomes' comments make it clear the Chiefs still expect Kelce to play a central role in their pursuit of another championship.
