Despite rumors of retirement and his upcoming wedding to Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce is far from slowing down. As he heads into the 2026 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Kelce has already shifted his focus toward leadership and mentoring.
According to a report from Yahoo Sports, Kelce is spending his time studying the team's rookies. He has been working closely with his brother, Jason Kelce, to watch film and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the team's rookies.
On an episode of their 'New Heights' podcast, he discussed Chiefs top three defensive picks: Cornerback Mansoor Delane, edge rusher R. Thomas Mason and defensive tackle Peter Woods. However, he had high praise for Mason's athleticism.
“The guy is a [expletive] freak of nature in terms of athleticism and explosiveness. I can’t wait to see how this guy gets after the quarterback, man," Kelce stated. "It’s been kinda something that the Chiefs have been looking at to get better at. That’s getting after the QB and really putting quarterbacks under duress.”

Thomas spent his entire four-year career with the Oklahoma Sooners. In his last two seasons, he established himself as a consistent playmaker on the edge.
Reports state that he forced two fumbles in both 2024 and 2025. His statistical production remained high with nine sacks in 2024 and 6.5 in 2025. Although there was a dip in his production, it was largely due to his mid-season setback.
During a memorable touchdown against the Tennessee Volunteers on November 1, Thomas suffered a quad injury that sidelined him for three games.
When he returned for the playoffs, Oklahoma was already eliminated in the first round. However, Kelce believes that Mason will be the game-changer at the edge position.
“I think this is going to be a game-changer at the edge position. I know he had a hamstring last year on an unbelievable fumble recovery," Kelce said. "So we'll see him when he gets in the building. I'm sure Spags [Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] will have a fun time putting him to work, as well."
Kelce Emerging as a Leader for the Upcoming Season
The Chiefs’ defense had a rough time last year. They couldn't stop opponents when it mattered most, which is a big reason why they finished with a losing record of 6 wins and 11 losses.
To turn things around this season, they will try to get better at preventing the other team's drives. Therefore, he pointed out the weaknesses of young players in a bid to help them, specifically Peter Woods.
“You gotta watch that left arm, though, that left arm gets a little hot,” Kelce added. “Right here, the left arm gets (up), that’s head and neck area. Peter. We’ve got to stay away from the head and neck area. We’ve got to swat that ball. We’ve got to work that technique better.”
Kelce isn’t just coming out as a critique but as an experienced player who is dedicating his last season to help the entire roster succeed.
He is making sure the Chiefs' newest players are ready to fix past errors and keep the team's winning streak alive.
