Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Jason Dunn sees more than a roster addition in Kansas City's decision to sign former basketball player Mason Pline.
The Chiefs signed Pline to a one-year, $885,000 contract after the former Furman standout impressed during a minicamp tryout. Dunn discussed the move on the Chiefs Concerns podcast with co-host Marcus Dash.
"I kind of joke at this sometimes, man. You basketball guys, you don't know what you're going to get out of them sometimes. Something going to be physical or not. " Dunn said on Sunday."But if he's played both football and basketball during this time, then he's going to have a physicality to him..."
At Ferris State University, he played basketball for three seasons before switching to football in 2021, and he won Division II national championships in 2021 and 2022 with the Ferris State Bulldogs.

The Chiefs have a history of signing former basketball players, including Mark Vital and Demetrius Harris.
Then Pline recorded 32 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns during his final college season at Furman. However, he has not appeared in a regular-season game, but his experience with the 49ers in 2024 and the Saints in 2025 gives him familiarity with the NFL's demands.
"Man, it's all competition, Marcus, is what I see. That's what I look at. And so, you know, you say camp body," Dunn continued on June 11."But they might try to find a diamond in the rough. He has NFL experience…He has NFL experience. So, he knows what it's all about, being in the NFL. So, I think this is good because you challenge guys not to be comfortable...”
Pline joins a tight end room led by Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jared Wiley, with Jake Briningstool and Tre Watson competing for opportunities as camp approaches.
With Pline in the roster, the Chiefs add competition to their current TE room. However, early attention is already shifting toward the franchise's long-term plans.
Chiefs Eye Long-Term Tight End Option in Early Draft Projection
The Kansas City Chiefs may have found an early name to watch as they look toward life after Travis Kelce.
According to Athlon Sports, analyst Luke Easterling predicted the Chiefs could select LSU tight end Trey'Dez Green with the No. 25 overall pick in Round 1.
“Travis Kelce is an annual rental at this point, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see one of the most prolific tight ends in NFL history call it a career after this season,” Easterling wrote. “Green is a towering target with impressive athleticism for his size...He could be a dangerous addition to a Kansas City offense..."
Green is coming off a strong 2025 season at LSU, where he earned second-team All-SEC honors. The Zachary, Louisiana native finished the year with 33 catches for 433 yards and seven touchdowns.
If he continues to make his mark, Green could become one of the top tight end prospects in the 2027 class and a potential fit for the Chiefs' offense.
