The 2025 season ended in a solid loss for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a torn ACL and LCL in Week 15. And as he is expected to appear in OTAs soon, a former tight end has sent a message to the Kansas City Chiefs about their approach.
In an episode of Chiefs Concerns on YouTube, hosted by Jason Dunn, a former Chiefs tight end, and his co-host, Marcus Dash, were discussing route discipline and Mahomes. This conversation revolves around a key offense issue of Mahomes after attempting to pass and rush.
“What we're expecting, probably with our offense, was gonna change a little bit now is because of the lack of mobility that the patcher may have, is more time around us,” Jason Dunn said in a conversation on Chiefs Concerns.

“And sometimes when the ball is thrown, and you'd be able to see it, it's a little bit too late because the defender gets to see it too,” Dunn said.
Dunn’s analysis emphasizes the need for timely routes where receivers are where they need to be when Mahomes throws.
“Pat’s gonna have to be able to throw it. One thing I don’t want Pat to do is I don’t wanna see him taking off as much as he used to in the past,” Dunn said.
Before Mahomes sustained his injury, he gained 3,587 passing yards and threw 11 interceptions against 22 touchdowns.
The Chiefs’ wide receiver room struggled to display its previous plays. According to Aaron Schatz's ESPN report, their receiving scores compared to last season “were significantly bad.”
Rashee Rice, one of the Chiefs' key receivers, scored just “a 49 out of 100 in the off-season. Tyquan Thornton had a 36, and Xavier Worthy just a 25,” Schatz wrote.
While Mahomes remains ‘questionable’ because of his injury, the Chiefs have made efforts to change their offensive coaching staff.
Chiefs Expert Applauds The Changes Chad O’Shea Is Bringing
In the May 6 episode of Locked on Chiefs on YouTube, Matt Derrick joined the hosts to talk about Chad O’Shea. The Chiefs’ new wide receiver coach was hired in January 2026 and, according to Derrick, has brought a more hands-on coaching approach.
Derrick said, “You’ve heard talk about Chad O’Shea because that was the most noticeable difference, and there's a reason for that…A good coach, an outgoing guy... He’s a demonstrative coach on the field."
53-year-old O’Shea brings 30 years of experience. He was a part of the New England Patriots for ten years between 2009 and 2018, during which they won three Super Bowls: XLIX, LI, and LIII.
From 2020 to 2025, he contributed to a 45-56-0 record with the Cleveland Browns before parting ways and joining the Chiefs. Revitalizing the receiving corps is now O’Shea’s primary objective.
