D.J. Uiagalelei’s lone season at Florida State turned into one of the toughest stretches of his football journey. As the Seminoles stumbled to a 2-10 campaign, the backlash surrounding the quarterback only kept growing, with his father revealing its true extent.

Things reportedly got so intense that Uiagalelei avoided restaurants and public places whenever he was away from the football facility. Now, his father, David Uiagalelei, is opening up on what the family dealt with during that difficult period while appearing on The Coach JB Show podcast on Friday.

“He was receiving d**** hreats, b*** threats’’, Big Dave said. “He couldn’t even go to a McDonald’s in Florida.”

After QB Jordan Travis ' leg injury, which ended his career in 2023, DJ was the hope for Florida's state, especially after coming from the Clemson Tigers and the Oregon State.

He had a dominating performance in 2023 of 2,638 passing yards with 21 touchdowns. But in Florida, these numbers came down to 1,065 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2024.

The Seminoles started 0-3 after facing struggles on offense and failing to score consistently. By missing red zone chances and allowing opponents to dominate on the field defensively.

Regardless of the public sentiment, head coach Mike Norvell considers it not Uiagalelei's fault alone.

"He made some poor decisions and a couple bad throws, but you've got to help the quarterback," Novell said. "I don't think we've done a good job of that consistently. At the end of the day, we all have to have ownership in that."

Even after FSU picked up a 14-9 win over California, criticism continued because the offense still failed to improve much. Then, in 2025, the Chargers signed DJ as a free agent when he was not selected in the draft.

Why DJ Uiagalelei’s Chargers Opportunity Could Be Bigger Than Expected

Florida State and Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalele is fighting for a spot with the Los Angeles Chargers.

As per Sports Illustrated’s Nate Gosney, Uiagalelei went undrafted in 2025 after a difficult final season at Florida State, but the Chargers kept him on their practice squad for the entire year.

“Uiagalelei has an uphill battle in making the Chargers' final 53-man roster, as they are likely to keep two QBs on the roster to help another position room have room for someone who may have earned a spot,” Gosney wrote

Uiagalelei’s future opportunity could grow even more over time. Trey Lance may not stay with the team always with his limited performance, recording 226 with an average of 4.0 yards last season, which could open a way for DJ to compete for the backup quarterback role behind Justin Herbert.

Being 6-foot-4 and 252 pounds, Uiagalelei brings the size, arm strength, and physical ability that make him a good factor for a team.

If he improves and performs well during training camp and in the preseason games, the Chargers may decide to give him a shot.
