Fans Furious with Mike Vrabel's Controversial Pre-draft Decision

Apr 13, 2026, 4:14 AM CUT

The New England Patriots ended the 2025 season on a solid note, 14-3. So, fans looked forward to hearing from Mike Vrabel ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. But the head coach's pre-draft decision left fans furious.

Vrabel is choosing silence during the most important evaluation period of the offseason. Media availability serves as a standard precursor to the annual selection process. As fans expect transparency during this time of year, Vrabel took a tough call.

“Last year, Mike Vrabel participated in the Patriots' pre-draft press conference. This year, Vrabel reportedly won't be participating," reported Pro Football Talk on April 12.

Team officials announced that Patriots executive Eliot Wolf will be in charge of leading this specific scouting breakdown in Vrabel's absence. It will be taking place on Monday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Vrabel taking a backseat came in the wake of recently leaked photos involving the coach and reporter Dianna Russini surfaced online. The Athletic is currently reviewing these images and the surrounding circumstances.

Last year's memory of Vrabel conducting the pre-draft conference at the Gillette Stadium is still fresh in fans' memories. He evaluated last year's top prospect, Abdul Carter, and also shared his philosophy on drafting a running back in the first round.

Cut to 2026, stepping back from this whole situation protects the head coach from expected media questions unrelated to the game. But the fans made their feelings clear in the comment section of Pro Football Talk's tweet.

New England Patriots Fans Put Mike Vrabel on the Hot Seat

Since the Patriots are spoiled with Day 3 picks, fans expected Vrabel to address their plan in the pre-draft conference. “Preaches accountability until applies to himself. Joke of a thing for a head coach to do,” wrote a disappointed fan. Last year in November, the head coach asked the players to own their team actions, be it good or bad.

To a fan, Vrabel running away from the situation now puts the spotlight on the draft day, which should be only about players. “Seems like a poor choice to wait till draft day to finally address media. Some kid’s big moment is going to be half a press conference of the Pats telling reporters they’re not here to talk about Dianna Russini lol ,“ a fan connected his decision with his off-field issues. Vrabel's relationship with Russini is still under investigation.

Excitement surrounded Vrabel's first event open to the media at the team’s new 160,000-square-foot training facility. "Why? Did something happen?" wrote a surprised fan. After all, he might have been eager to learn about Vrabel's draft plan after holding 11 selections.

A fan is already expecting the worst-case scenario. "Pats going 0-17 next season," a frustrated supporter declared. With important trade opportunities waiting, like the Patriots acquiring Philadelphia Eagles' A.J.Brown, Vrabel's absence did not sit well with many.
