Chiefs' $28M Salary Cap Casualty Face Harsh Reality Amid Free Agency

While teams make tough decisions to balance their books, it does not always bode well for players, especially those being released to free agency. Two former Chiefs players are experiencing that firsthand.
Following Super Bowl LX, the Kansas City Chiefs were approximately $60 million over the league’s $301.2 million salary cap.
The Chiefs' general manager, Brett Veach, officially released defensive end Mike Danna in late February to free up $8 million and offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor in early March to create $20 million in additional savings.
But even after having championship experience, both veterans remain completely unsigned.
Taylor brings an above-average starting profile as an offensive tackle with a market value of $15M. He is a pass protector who is known for his durability and high penalty count. But he missed the 2025 season due to an ankle injury.
However, Danna is a reliable run defender with total tackles for 194 in 87 games at just below $5 million. If a deal comes to pass, a lower price point makes sense, and Danna will likely have to compromise.
Still, releasing players
How Do These Financial Sacrifices Damage the Current Roster?
Everything comes with its consequences. The Chiefs need to address their weaknesses to be a powerful team in the upcoming season.
Taylor's sudden release completely exposed the offensive line. Insider Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star highlighted the offensive tackle spot as the third-biggest void on the team.
Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Josh Simmons achieved reasonable success last season with a blocking grade of 75.5. And the team's lineman, Jaylon Moore, remains capable on the right side. But the depth behind him looks incredibly bleak.
Backups Isa Pole, Chu Goodrich, and Ethan Driskell failed to impress due to injuries that happened last year. The Chiefs need premium help immediately. Sweeney noted the franchise could target a replacement tackle with the ninth overall pick.
The defensive front faces a similar issue with the release of Danna. The Chiefs' general manager, Brett Veach, explicitly named improving the pass rush a major priority at the recent NFL combine. The defensive end room is now thin and quickly needs to be addressed.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu has already signed with the Washington Commanders. And now the team is putting its trust in defensive ends George Karlaftis and Ashton Gillette.
Do you think these new additions will be able to eliminate the impact of released players? Let us know in the comments.
