Chiefs report Gives Dire Reality Check As GM Faces 7 Headaches

Before the Free agency season began, The Kansas City Star’s NFL analyst had addressed the Chiefs' weaknesses in the offseason.

Since then, he has updated the list to include the Chiefs’ weakest positions after free agency.

According to Pete Sweeney, the Chiefs' No. 1 weakness is the Cornerback position. The star cornerbacks, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, both signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

To which, he said, “When he got the opportunity in 2025, Nohl Williams flashed, which likely made the Chiefs comfortable trading Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for draft capital. But losing Jaylen Watson to the Rams, too, was a dagger to the position, in my eyes.”

While the Chiefs released Mike Danna, saving the team approximately $9M, Omenihu also followed Chenal in joining the Washington Commanders. This puts defensive tackle at 2nd position in the list of weaknesses.

Sweeney added, “Texas Tech’s David Bailey and Ohio State’s Arvell Reese are expected to go early, and it remains to be seen whether Steve Spagnuolo will grit his teeth and select the short-armed Rueben Bain Jr. from Miami, if he’s on the board.”

In the 3rd position ranks, the offensive tackle. Jawaan Taylor started 12 games for the Chiefs before sustaining an elbow injury. The Chiefs didn’t re-sign him in free agency and added no other tackles.

What are the other weaknesses for the Chiefs?

The Linebacker comes on No. 4 weakness.

Leo Chenal signed with the Washington Commanders, and the Chiefs reconstructed linebacker Drue Tranquill’s contract. But, behind Bolton and Tranquill, the remaining linebackers combined for just 157 defensive snaps last season, while Chenal alone logged 441.

After Brown's departure, the Chiefs might pick a WR at No. 9 in the NFL Draft, as Rice is also entering his contract year, making it their fifth of 7 weaknesses.

Safety ranks 6th, as while they did sign Alohi Gilman, but he still thinks it could use more depth.

The Chiefs addressed Sweeney’s concerns at RB and DT by signing Kenneth Walker, Emari Demercado, and Khyris Tonga. Travis Kelce’s return on a structured contract also allows them to push the search for a TE to next season.
