The Kansas City Chiefs continue to prioritize their defense in the draft to improve the gaps that need to be addressed after missing the playoffs last season.
The Chiefs fixed their running game struggle by adding Kenneth Walker to the team, and now they have an agreement with first-round defensive tackle Peter Woods on his rookie contract, as per NFL insider Adam Schefter, who broke the news on Monday via X.
“First-round pick Peter Woods and the Chiefs reached an agreement today on a 4-year, $18 million fully guaranteed deal, per Adie von Gontard and Ray Haija of @ymapaasports,” Schefter tweeted. “Woods is said to have received the highest upfront percentage of his signing bonus in Chiefs’ 1st-round history.”
The Chiefs gave Woods the highest signing bonus percentage ever awarded to a Kansas City first-round pick, including a $9.5 million signing bonus, and an average annual salary of $4.4 million.
With veteran defensive tackle Chris Jones carrying the load, the team expects Woods to play an important role. In his three seasons in college, he has recorded 41 solo tackles and five sacks, where he played both the defensive linemen and defensive tackle roles.
But Woods was not the only premier rookie to secure his future with the franchise on Monday.
Mansoor Delane Completes the First-Round Class
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Kansas City agreed to terms with cornerback Mansoor Delane.
The Chiefs selected Delane with the sixth overall pick in April, while the Chiefs selected Woods with the 29th pick.
They gave Delane a fully guaranteed four-year rookie contract worth $41.9 million with a $26.9 million signing bonus and an annual salary of $10.4 million.
The agreement also includes a team option for a fifth season, and the team signed the deal after the Chiefs signed Woods to a four-year contract.
The LSU player arrives after Kansas City moved on from several cornerbacks during the offseason, including Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. That roster turnover could place Delane in an important role from Week 1.
Mansoor has recorded 110 solo tackles and 27 pass deflections. He has played three years at Virginia Tech and has played his senior year at LSU.
With both first-round picks under contract and expectations, can Woods and Delane help the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2026 season? Let us know in the comments!
