The Kansas City Chiefs are now reconsidering Rashee Rice's future with the team after his off-field situation.
“The Chiefs have no plans in the foreseeable future to discuss a long-term extension with WR Rashee Rice,” Adam Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show.
Rice signed a four-year, $6.49 million deal with the Chiefs in 2023. The WR will earn a base salary of $1.56 million this year, carrying a cap hit of $2.06 million.
Without these off-field controversies, Rice would have had better opportunities with the Chiefs, signing a contract extension after the 2026 season.
“If Rashee Rice were a clean player with no off-the-field issues, with no injuries, we’d be talking about a new contract this offseason in excess of $40 million a year,” Schefter said on his podcast.
Rice is now serving a 30-day j*** sentence after undergoing knee surgery just one week earlier. As a consequence, he cannot work with the Chiefs’ trainers or use NFL-level rehab facilities.
Dallas County records show that Rice will be released on June 16, causing him to miss the Chiefs’ organized team activities (OTAs) in late May and the mandatory minicamp from June 9–11.
The Chiefs entered the offseason hoping for stability at wide receiver, but Rice’s situation has again created concerns around the offense.
Right now, Xavier Worthy looks like the secure long-term option, while the Chiefs also have Tyquan Thornton and rookie Cyrus Allen.
Chiefs Encouraged to Strengthen Offense Before Training Camp
According to the Sporting News, Kansas City spent much of the offseason strengthening its defense, but now the questions surround the wide receiver room.
The Chiefs are expecting players like Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, Jalen Royals, and Cyrus Allen to support Patrick Mahomes this season, but they need a veteran presence.
"They might, and it might be after June 1 or once training camp gets underway, and they realize more is needed," Adam Schultz of the Sporting News reported May 25. "Hill is a possibility, but how healthy will he be in 2026? Aiyuk hasn't played in over a year, and Diggs does have some baggage, but was productive last season."
Brandon Aiyuk and Tyreek Hill are coming from injury. And Stefon Diggs and Hill would likely demand a lucrative financial commitment.
The Chiefs have relied on low-cost additions in recent years, bringing in players like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a position with a short-term role in the team.
