The Kansas City Chiefs are making a smart, low-risk move by bringing in a promising player who recorded over sixty solo tackles to strengthen their defense.

The team is adding a cornerback on an undrafted free agent deal after he went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft. NFL journalist Arye Pulli shared this news via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

“San Diego State CB Bryce Phillips is signing with the #Chiefs, a deal with $247,500 guaranteed, per his agent @Alex_Styrt of @PAA_Football. Phillips becomes one of the highest-paid UDFA DBs in the 2026 class,” Pulli tweeted.

Phillips, who played for the San Diego State Aztecs, started every game over the past two seasons and recorded 34 tackles with one interception in his final year. He recorded interceptions in back-to-back seasons and forced a fumble in his final year.

On his Pro Day, he ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash and posted a 37.5-inch vertical, numbers that helped push him into priority signing territory. Bryce Phillips, the younger brother of Clark Phillips III, will compete for a roster spot at the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp in May.

As per EASports, Phillips is an 80 overall cornerback with his acceleration of 91, with his ability to be a reliable man and zone skills, he can make a good press easily in the game.

However, his pass-rushing traits are low, and his offensive ball skills remain limited, keeping his role strictly on defense. But overall, he projects as a quick, physical cover corner with room to grow into a more complete player.

Why Bryce Phillips Is a Strong Scheme Fit for the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing to invest in undrafted talent, adding cornerback Bryce Phillips after the 2026 NFL Draft. General Manager Brett Veach brought him in as a part of that effort and to strengthen the Chiefs' depth for their defensive plays.

Phillips' profile fits Kansas City’s defensive approach. Coordinator Spagnuolo values physical defensive backs who can tackle and stop big plays.

Phillips recorded a missed tackle rate of 5% and allowed just 29 yards after the catch in 2025, just the kind of talent their plays need. He even shows his impact in coverage, completing 45% of passes against him.

Phillips is expected to contribute early on special teams, with a chance to earn defensive snaps as he adjusts to the Chiefs' system.
