Kansas City Chiefs fans got a new look at the team’s future home on Wednesday, July 22, when the club released concept images for a new stadium in Kansas City. The Chiefs plan to open the $3 billion stadium for the 2031 NFL season.

In its July 22 announcement, the Chiefs said the new stadium will seat about 70,000 fans, feature a clear ETFE roof, and have more than 20,000 parking spaces. The club chose Kansas City-based MANICA as lead design architect and HNTB as architect of record.

“We're proud to name MANICA as our lead design architect and HNTB as the architect of record for this transformational stadium undertaking, which will come to life over the next five years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.

The decision keeps two major parts of the project close to home. MANICA created the winning design after a six-month competition, while HNTB will handle the detailed architectural work.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to be entrusted with designing the next home of the Kansas City Chiefs in our hometown,” David Manica, president and owner of MANICA, said as per Chiefs.com

The plans include a seating bowl shaped like an Arrowhead, a Drum Deck, the Ring of Honor above the bowl, and tailgating parking. Engineers are working on the stadium’s size, roof, and shape to help carry crowd noise.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns' $2.4 billion domed stadium is underway and is set to open in Brook Park in 2029.

As the Chiefs will be having a new stadium, they clearly want fans to recognize pieces of Arrowhead when they walk inside.

The Chiefs are using their current home as a guide for the move to Kansas City, Kansas. MANICA spent months creating a modern stadium while keeping familiar Chiefs traditions in the plans.

The team expects to move after its Arrowhead lease ends in 2031. David Manica said the project means more to him because it is his first stadium design in his hometown.

“The Chiefs knew exactly what they wanted. As you look at those renderings, you can tell that there was a lot of intentionality behind building a great experience,” Kansas Mayor Christal Watson said, according to KMBC.

The seating bowl takes cues from Arrowhead, the Drum Deck keeps a familiar ceremony, and the Ring of Honor will sit above the bowl. The Chiefs plan to build more than 20,000 tailgating parking spaces, while sound experts are working to amplify crowd noise inside the stadium.

The Lamar Hunt statue will remain part of a modern plaza. The Hall of Honor will grow to more than twice its current size, and the team store will expand by about four times. A construction start date has not been announced.
