Chiefs HC Announces Change of Plans For Mahomes' Offense

Apr 5, 2026, 5:30 PM CUT

Andy Reid is making changes to the Chiefs' offense. The head coach detailed new plans for Patrick Mahomes' weapons heading into the next season. The strategy starts with a fully healthy Xavier Worthy.

While addressing the NFL community during the 2026 Annual League Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, the coach spoke about his confidence in WR Xavier Worthy and that he will perform this year.

“That was a unique deal,” Reid said. “I would tell you that…we were afraid to do certain things with (Worthy). So I think he is coming back healthy. I think it opens up that whole picture you saw during training camp, where he had a whole bunch of different routes in there.”

Reid acknowledged the Kansas City Chiefs adjusted Xavier Worthy’s role last season to protect him after an early setback. The 2024 first-round pick suffered a torn labrum on just his third regular-season snap—following a collision with teammate Travis Kelce.

Due to this, he missed two games and played 14 games for the Chiefs. He sits at a Pro Football Focus grade of 67 with 532 snaps played, managing just about 500+ yards with one touchdown.

Worthy was drafted by the Chiefs in the 2024 NFL draft from the University of Texas at Austin as a first-round, 28th pick.

Best known for his elite speed, Worthy took 4.21 seconds for the 40-yard dash, the fastest in NFL Combine history.

Reid believes that the reason for his poor performance was the injury, resulting in reduced production. But now, he is ready for a comeback.

Mahomes Update Includes Other Key Changes Revealed During Chiefs Address

While the spotlight stayed on Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy’s return, Reid discussed other major developments, too. The bigger picture of the Kansas City Chiefs' offense started to take shape soon.

After missing out on the playoffs in more than a decade and having an obvious gaping hole in the offense, the Chiefs have a plan to fix their receiving department.

One of the key names remains Rashee Rice.

Reid didn’t hold back on the talent, saying, “The sky’s the limit for that kid.”

At the same time, there’s still no concrete update on his case, leaving some uncertainty around how and when he will fully factor into the offense.

Then comes the re-signing of Tyquan Thornton, who gives the Chiefs another speed option on the outside. Reid made it clear how important that was.

“I think getting Thornton back, I think that was a big, big part of it… and gives you three guys who can roll pretty good there,” Reid said.

Additionally, in the re-signing of second-year receiver Jalen Royals, you start to see the plan.  More depth, more speed, and more flexibility around Mahomes result in a more layered offense.
