Chiefs HC Andy Reid makes unpopular training camp decision

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has avoided joint training camp practice for a long time now.

Since 2013, when he took up the job at Kansas, they have not taken part in a joint training schedule. That tradition is not going to change anytime soon.

NFL insider Charles Goodman recently shared on his X handle that Reid had recently turned down a similar training ritual.

"The Kansas City Chiefs won't hold a joint training camp practice with another NFL club in 2026," said Goodman. "Andy Reid isn't a fan of joint practices, despite their growing popularity. Big Red has dodged joint practices to this point, but he might not be able to avoid them forever."

Goodman's posted tweet clearly showed his aversion to his beliefs. Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell was the last coach to try it out in 2024.

"It just, it didn't work out," said Campbell to the Detroit News. "I had talked to Coach Reid a while back; that's just not necessarily something that they do."

This Reid move is not sitting well with the fans. The reason being currently, it has become customary for NFL teams to schedule joint practice sessions. A total of 30 clubs have so far scheduled joint practice sessions, but Reid has stayed aloof.

Back in 2024, too, Reid had a similar opportunity but turned it down. As per A to Z Sports, Kansas and the Las Vegas Raiders were the only two teams to back out during that period.

Reid has already stated why he chooses to stay away from such practices.

Reid Wants To Maintain Secrecy With His Training

In today's day and age, nothing is hidden.

Reid, as a result, wants to keep the secrecy about his team's practice. Speaking to the media back in 2015, Reid had this to say.

"I’ve just never been that big on that,” Reid said of joint practices. “A lot of teams do it. A lot of successful teams do it. I really don’t want to give anybody anything that I don’t have to give.”

Guarding your playbook is the norm that Reid wants to adhere to religiously. With the surge of social media, it is not uncommon for fans to record videos and share them on social media.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had imposed a similar restriction last year. They requested fans not to record their secret training videos.

However, according to Steelers writer Mark Kaboly, that fell on deaf ears. The fans ignored the requests and recorded the videos. By the time, Twitter was flooded with videos of individual plays and drills.

Reid's main objective has been to simply come to camp and work hard. Other than that, he doesn't want to take the hassle of managing players outside the organization. Despite the mixed reviews about his stance, Reid does not want to change this belief.

With two back-to-back Super Bowl wins, he has perhaps earned the right to practice in solitude. What do you think of Reid's choice to avoid joint training sessions? Let us know through your comments.
