Chiefs Get $8M Update After Free Agency Moves

Mar 23, 2026, 6:07 AM CUT

Things are getting serious for the Kansas City Chiefs, where every financial step will have an impact on their salary cap.

The NFL financial information site, Spotrac, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, giving a crucial update regarding the Chiefs. It seems they are in 27th (at the time of writing this article) with $8.16 million in cap space.

The Chiefs' management reached this financial margin after executing a trio of recent signings involving quarterback Justin Fields, guard Mike Caliendo, and running back Emari Demercado.

The ledger shrank after getting Fields from the New York Jets. He had previously signed a 2-year, $40 million contract extension with the Jets in 2025, with $30 million guaranteed.

Fields has recorded over 1000 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, and an interception. The Chiefs are paying him $3 million of the remaining $10 million, and the Jets are covering the rest. This puts a 1% dent in their cap space.

Additionally, the offensive line required immediate attention. They secured guard Mike Caliendo on a 1-year, $1.3 million deal that includes a vital $650,000 in guaranteed money.

The Chiefs also fortified the backfield by adding former Arizona Cardinals running back Emari Demercado, who rushed 312 yards and received 13 receptions in 13 matches.

Demercado has signed a $1.2 million contract with $550,000 guaranteed, leaving the Chiefs to figure out how to afford another major offensive weapon with $8 million in cap space.

What Is Coming Next for the Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs are possibly going to be in battle with the Baltimore Ravens for Tyreek Hill, who was released by the Miami Dolphins and is available in the open market.

Hill is highly coveted as a $90 million playmaker who commands premium compensation. Adding a former All-Pro would instantly supercharge the passing attack, given his career totals of over 11,000 receiving yards, 83 touchdowns, and 819 receptions, plus his great speed (he ran a 100-meter dash in 10.15 seconds last year).

Reuniting with Hill would give Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes his most explosive weapon back. Mahomes will thrive with the speed of a wide receiver like Hill.

However, Baltimore desperately wants to load up on offensive dominance, while Kansas City needs to protect its championship status at all costs. The upcoming bidding war will be fierce for the team.

Losing out on Hill, who spent 6 seasons with the Chiefs, to a direct rival would be bad news for the Dolphins. Only time will tell how this Tyreek Hill situation turns out.

Do you think the Chiefs can manage with a $8 million in cap space? Let us know in the comments.
