Expectations were high when the Chiefs selected Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the first round, but his NFL career has yet to take off. Heading into 2026, questions remain over what comes next.
After the Chiefs passed on his fifth-year option, Anudike-Uzomah will have to fight for snaps in an increasingly competitive edge rusher group.
“The Kansas City native and former Kansas State edge rusher has not lived up to his billing through three years," Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports wrote. “And the Chiefs declined his fifth-year option this offseason.”

The decision to decline the fifth-year option became official on the league's May 1, 2026, deadline, as exercising the option would have forced the front office to lock in a fully guaranteed $14.48 million cap number for the 2027 season.
As per Goldman of AtoZ Sports, Anudike-Uzomah’s career has been affected more by injuries and situations than by good performance on the field.
Former first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Felix Anudike-Uzomah has recorded thirty-eight tackles, three sacks, and a few forced turnovers in 34 games from 2023 to 2024.
His most productive season came in 2024, although his numbers were still not enough to make a major impact.
After showing some progress in 2024, he was hoping to take another step forward, but a preseason injury kept him away for all of 2025.
With Ashton Gillotte and second-round pick R. Mason Thomas joining the group, Anudike-Uzomah will have to compete for snaps this season.
While he already knows Steve Spagnuolo's defensive system, securing regular snaps will depend on his performance in 2026.
However, Anudike-Uzomah wasn't the only player Tyler Brown focused on, with several other Chiefs also facing important seasons in 2026.
Tyler Brown lists five Chiefs with everything to prove
According to Tyler Brown of KCSN, on July 6, 2026, he discussed the Kansas City Chiefs’ top five players entering a contract year and included Felix Anudike-Uzomah among them, pointing out that this season could decide his future with the team.
“At just 25 years old, the physical tools that made him an attractive prospect have not disappeared,” Tyler Brown wrote. “2026 will determine whether he has a place in the NFL in 2027, but regardless of how it plays out, it almost certainly will not be with the Chiefs.”
Felix Anudike-Uzomah is not the only Chiefs player under the spotlight in 2026. Tyler Brown also identified Rashee Rice, Kristian Fulton, Drue Tranquill and Chamarri Conner as players entering pivotal contract years.
With multiple players under pressure to strengthen their standing, all eyes will now be on whether the former first-round pick can make the most of his opportunity.
