Patrick Mahomes' numbers have steadily declined over the last three seasons. But former Denver Broncos legend Mark Schlereth doesn't think the blame for that should fall on the Chiefs quarterback alone.
In the June 13 episode of The Stinkin Truth Podcast with Mark Schlereth, the three-time Super Bowl champion pointed toward the roster that head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs have built around him.
"I don't think it's necessarily Patrick Mahomes losing his fastball. I don't think that at all," Schlereth said. "Look at the roster, and I think to myself, where are they from a dynamic player's standpoint?"

Schlereth argued that Mahomes remains the same elite quarterback, even if the production didn't reflect it.
Mahomes' statistical drop is quite noticeable. He threw for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns during his MVP season in 2022 while completing 67 percent of his passes.
Since then, his production has fallen each year. He finished the 2025 season with 3,500 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and a 62.7 completion percentage.
But the Broncos legend believes the roster lacks the dynamic playmakers that once helped elevate Mahomes' numbers.
"I still don't think Patrick Mahomes is going to reach the heights he did back in the day when he had Tyreek Hill, and he had other guys like that," Schlereth said.
Schlereth's criticism about the Chiefs’ supporting cast ultimately circles back to head coach Andy Reid and the front office.
Schlereth Questions Chiefs' Supporting Cast Around Mahomes
The former Broncos lineman pointed out that Kansas City's offense doesn't have the complementary football that once made it nearly impossible to defend.
"The other thing is, I want guys that can run the complement of every route in the route tree," Schlereth said. "Well, you don't have that."
He used wide receiver Xavier Worthy as an example, arguing that defenses can narrow their focus because they know the routes they are most concerned about.
Schlereth also pointed to the changing role of veteran tight end Travis Kelce and the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the receiving corps.
"Travis Kelce doesn't operate or doesn't dominate the middle of the field anymore," Schlereth said.
Later, he also asked whether Rashee Rice will be available before the season begins, suggesting that the wide receiver's presence could play a role in Mahomes' performance.
After a disappointing 2025 season, one of the biggest questions Kansas City is facing is whether Mahomes can return to MVP form. According to Schlereth, it would depend on the kind of supporting cast Reid and the franchise can give Mahomes.
