Brett Veach Leaves Door Open for Further Chiefs Roster Moves

Even though the 2026 Draft season came to an end, the Kansas City Chiefs are not done adding players to their roster for the upcoming season.

During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on May 1, Chiefs' General Manager Brett Veach discussed adding more free agents to the Chiefs' roster, as shared by Starcade Media's X account.

“There’s certainly still the possibility of adding some free agents. I’ve spoken to some agents already. If something makes sense for us and the player, we’re all for it,” Veach stated.

The Chiefs drafted Mansoor Delane, Peter Wood, and Emmet Johnson in this year's draft. However, the Chiefs continue to explore free agents, as they cannot fill every gap on a 90-man roster.

Critical need for players at the linebacker and tight end positions were not addressed in the 2026 Draft. Other positions like wide receiver and defensive end would also need experienced depth for a full season.

Veach is observing 20 undrafted free agents at the rookie minicamp, including EJ Smith, the son of Emmitt Smith, a running back known for his versatility. Defensive back Bryce Phillips also displayed solid coverage skills during his collegiate career.

Based on how these rookies perform, the Chiefs may still add veteran players if needed. The Chiefs' decisions in free agency allows for affordable late signings without affecting compensatory picks and provides flexibility in the roster.

Even after the draft, the Chiefs still have a clear area that needs their undivided attention on offense.

Chiefs' WR Problem Ahead of 2026 Season

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for a dependable wide receiver (WR) after exiting the 2026 NFL Draft with only fifth-round pick Cyrus Allen at the position. While drafting Allen sets them in the right direction, he's not the complete solution to their WR room.

According to a ClutchPoints' report, the Kansas City Chiefs may turn to veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to fix their ongoing offensive gap after the draft.

Despite adding running back Kenneth Walker on offense and Justin Fields at quarterback, the team still lacks someone to fill in at the slot receiver position. That gap has pushed them toward experienced free agents.

The Chiefs already have different archetypes of receivers in their WR room. Xavier Worthy brings speed, Rashee Rice works well after the reception, and Tyquan Thornton stretches the field.

Adding Stefon would enable the Chiefs to control the field and the game's momentum. During his time with the New England Patriots, he recorded 85 receptions, 1,013 receiving yards, and an average of 11.3 yards.

For Kansas City, adding Diggs would bring stability to the offense and give both Fields and Mahomes a trusted option in the passing game.

Who do you think the Chiefs are going to reach out to first, offering them to join as a free agent? Let us know!
