The Kansas City Chiefs' head coach, Andy Reid, and his wife, Tammy, hosted the event Brats 'N' Burgers with Coach Reid, a backyard-style social fundraiser on Saturday.
”Chiefs doing good in the community on Saturday! WR Xavier Worthy hosted his Dream B1G Football Camp for 350 KC kids," Eric Graves of KMBC wrote Sunday. “Coach Andy Reid grilled burgers and brats to raise money for the 1855 Harris-Kearney House in Westport. Reid and his wife Tammy have already donated $100k.”
The Reids held the event on the front lawn of the 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum, which is older than a century, intending to raise $500,000 for the renovation of the building to prevent it from cracking, for water mitigation, and for keeping the museum open for local public schools, field trips, and historic tours.
"I think it's important just from the standpoint of Kansas City and maintaining the history of Kansas City," Reid said.
Interestingly, this initiative started as a joke when the president of the Westport Historical Society, Marty Wiedenmann Jarvis, was talking to Reid about the event.
“And he's, you know, ‘Brats? Brats! I cook brats. Everybody loves my brats,’” she recalled. “I said, ‘Well, you better not joke or I'm gonna hold you to it.’ That's how this evolved, because he gets excited about fun stuff, so, uh, that's his fault.”
However, apart from the community event, Reid even shared an update on a player who has been getting more opportunities during the Chiefs' offseason practices.
Andy Reid Opens Up About Unexpected Player Working With Starters
The former undrafted free agent, who returned to the Chiefs after a short time with the New York Jets, has now gotten the opportunity to work alongside the first team.
With the Chiefs continuing to analyze their options at tackle during OTAs, Reid addressed Pole's progress while speaking to the media.
"Esa [Pole], you can tell that he really worked this offseason. He looks strong out there. He's a smart kid when you really get to know him,” Reid said. “He doesn't have a ton of experience, but he's a smart kid, and he gets it. So, he's getting reps in there with the starters and kind of rotating in."
The first team offensive line currently has most positions settled, with Pole's clearest path to a larger role. He is rotating at guard and tackle, gaining valuable first-team reps.
And if his progress grows in the training camp and practices, Pole could strengthen his chances of playing an important role on the roster.
