Andy Reid Questions NFL Franchises Over Matt Nagy Snub for Head Coach Roles

Jan 29, 2026, 11:01 AM CUT

How long would a two-time Super Bowl-winning coordinator stay on the market? Well, Matt Nagy, the former Kansas City Chiefs coordinator, is finding out the hard way. Now, Chiefs HC Andy Reid weighed in on the situation.

In a recent media session with reporters via Zoom, Reid counted Nagy’s achievements and stated he deserves a head coach job.

“He deserves to have a head coaching job, and if not, it gives him an opportunity to go out and do his thing. Before the season even started here, I knew that he wanted an opportunity to have his own show... He's been a head coach, he was Coach of the Year, this guy, all the things I've said about him, I still feel about him. There's nothing different there,” Reid told the reporters.

For a little while, Matt Nagy did have a head coaching gig. In 2018, he left the Chiefs to be the Chicago Bears' head coach at just 39 years old. And there was some success. The Bears won the NFC North for the first time in over a decade.

Nagy was even awarded Coach of the Year for his 12-4-0 record with the Chicago Bears and a playoff berth that season. However, that same success didn't come in the following years. 2019 and 2020 both ended with an 8-8 record. And with a 6-11 record in the final year, Nagy was out. That performance drop may explain why he has not received another head coaching offer.

So far, Nagy sat for interviews with the Tennessee Titans, the Baltimore Ravens, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Las Vegas Raiders. The Titans and Ravens no longer have any vacancies, while the latter two haven't decided yet.

“Somebody is missing a gem here, that's how I feel, and I would love to see him get picked up and going. At the same time, we got back a gem. It has a chance to be a win-win here whenever everything is set and done.”

Reid's endorsement carries significant weight. While Nagy contributed to the Chiefs' success, his recent failures as a head coach may have franchises doubting him.

Nagy’s History With the Chiefs

In 2022, the Chiefs had the most yards by total offense in the league with 7,032. At the time, Nagy was the QBs coach.

They’ve since fallen to the 20th rank in the 2025 season. With a 6-11-0 record and elimination from the playoffs, the team ranked at the bottom 10 in rushing yards per game.

In both his stints at the Chiefs, things soured for Nagy after he became the offensive coordinator, especially after the last season, when the defense felt entirely lackluster.

Do you think he'll find more success as a head coach?
